We also did not discuss the “developer’s questions on tabbing”.

What we did discuss was how D2L can help our Disabilities Service Office. 2 items came up during this discussion.

1. In the Classlist tool. It would be nice if there was an icon that only displayed next to the students that have signed up for services at the DRC. This information already exists in the school’s databases. It would require the addition of 3 fields to the XML file that processes enrollments through D2L’s Holding Tank Integration that all of our schools already use.

-Yes/No for are you registered at your DRC -numerical variable describing the tie increase that you require. 1.25 or 1.5 times more time than other students.
-Reason (Hearing, sight, motor…)

Mousing over this icon would display this data.

This would alert Instructors and TAs to the idea that they need to adjust for certain students.

2. Taking those same three fields and the icon to the quiz tool. When instructors use a time limit of minutes, the identified students should automatically be moved to the Special Access area of the quiz.
They should be moved with the same Start and End Dates, but with a different amount of minutes that correlates to the numerical variable previously mentioned. To comply with serving two masters (instructor’s instructional freedom and schools lawful compliance) the instructor should be able to over-rule the Special Access by removing it for the student. I suspect after the first two or three quizzes the instructor that wants to remove it will simply give up as it is to much effort to not comply.

*Both items should only display to those that have a role that has this enabled in the Roles and Permissions panel. This should not be available for observation by other students. Quiz tool does this by default. The classlist can do this and does do this for other icons that already exist.

The other item that came up was how our DRC provides “class notes” for courses that have students in face-to-face courses and have students that are registered. For Arizona, we have a special role or Classified Staff at the DRC and they can build a Discussion Forum and Topic along with a Group in any course site in the system. They build a group and add in the students that registered and the student that volunteered to take notes. They then build a Forum and Topic that is restrictred. The note taker can Compose a new message and attach the notes to the message. One message for every class day. Janna was thinking of something like this in Content. However, this may add confusion to the instructor as now there are “extra” files in Manage Files/Course Files. Also, Arizona has students posting with a student role, Content would require an Instructor Role be given. The student doing the note taking is attending the course for credit and cannot have an instructor role in the course. They must have a standard student role. Creating a new tool to do this would mean that the system would have to open up to letting the corse dictate role related permissions. A significant change D2L programming, if it is meant to satisfy Arizona’s use case.
